This toy represents the first kanzen henkei (“perfectly transforming”) toy, that gives equal attention to each of it’s multiple modes. Prior to this, toys seemed to give weight to possibly a Robot mode over a second form, typically a vehicular / machine form.  Often the options were limited, and it was more or less a robo on it’s stomach or back, with wheels down or other minor adjustments…

In 1984 Takatoku filed for bankruptcy, and Bandai purchased the molds and rights to the Macross Valkyries. Through a complex series of licenses, Hasbro / Takara toys somehow ended up with the 1/48 scale molds for a toy that has reached cult like status, commonly known as the character “Jetfire” or “Skyfire” from the Transformers toy lines.

Takatoku created many original toy designs, some also later cannibalized by Hasbro and Takara, known as “Beetras” –  which were re-released as deluxe Insecticons. Most scholars/collectors of these toys regard these Takatoku originals far superior in design, engineering and materials, to the first “insecticons”.
